....If you terminate the baby stays slightly forward of the mast hinge, assuming the mast lays down toward the stern, the baby stays will slacken as the mast is raised and the shrouds take over.....
That is the case with ours....

.... but hasn't presented a problem as like you mentioned by then the shrouds do the job. It isn't important that the mast stay absolutly vertical, just enough so that you aren't bending the deck plate as was mentioned.

I put the mast up a couple times by hand, but I just felt it was too risky for me at this point in my life. One slip or problem and then you have hurt yourself or damaged the boat. If one does it by hand and gets hung up, and it will happen, then it is lower it and start all over again. I think the way to go is either of the factory options, block and tackle or the winch on a pole that they went to later.

Our boat came with a pop-top cover and it uses the same eye straps to ...

...secure it at the front (arrows) that are use for the mast raising baby stays and I believe the reason they are slightly ahead of the 'ideal location'. This isn't a situation with the X or M since they don't have the pop-top,

I'm sorry I should have posted on my reply to Glitzmaster7 that I already have the baby stays they came with the boat, when I bought the boat the PO made me aware of the importance of baby stays, That was one of the things I wanted to do before I bought the boat I wanted the mast raised to see if I could raise it, and that's when he showed me the baby stays, and that's when I also wanted a mast raising system

Sum, your baby's day anchors look like they are a touch too far forward. I understand that they serve another function and I too did not want to install more hardware and necessary. On mine, the PO install the and one on the other side of the main Halyard. The cheek block for the jib Halyard is perfectly placed just forward of the mast. The cheek block with the main Halyard is lined up with the back side of the mast as it should be. I can tighten the baby stay on the starboard side and it will not change as I raise the mast. However on the port side the baby stay will tighten as the mast is raised. As a result I started out a little bit loose. In the one picture of the cheek block you can see the unfaded paint line from the jib Halyard.

I'm assuming that is the way the factory did it so they could serve two purposes. They work fine there I just have to remember to not tighten them way down when I lower the mast. Just leave a touch of slack in them going down,

Probably this fall (Oct or Nov). We weren't there but a couple days the last time and were pretty busy with family and dentist stuff. Hopefully we will be there a little longer the next time.

Where is the motor in Alabama and what size is it? We hope to leave Florida within the next two weeks, but might go home thru St. Louis to visit and then wouldn't be in Alabama. If we don't go to St. Louis we still have to go to OK to help Hooley with the race care and then would be cutting through the top part of the state (thru Birmingham). I'm not sure if we have room or not as we are pretty packed now and have to haul race car parts (rear wing and tanks) home from OK,

p.s. sailor3269 sorry about the out of context banter:cry:.

you can turn the email notifiers off to the thread so you dont get the notifications...
you are the op of the thread, but the thread belongs to the forum and anyone is free to post, so if you have your notifier on and set to let you know when someone replies to a thread you have "subscribed" to, you will be notified of any and all activity on those threads....:D

Yep the board is sending you the e-mails not Frank and I ;). Actually this thread did pretty well getting into the 3rd page before it got off topic :). I use to get excited when threads drifted but now I'm part of the problem .

I kind of look at these boards as a bunch of us sitting around a cafe or bar talking over coffee or a beer and who knows where a topic will go,

More ?? on baby stays.

I'm thinking my boat has had semi-permanent baby stays made up. They look to be the same SS wire as the rest of the standing rigging and the swages look to be approxiamately the same age.

They are atached to the mast and them made down to SS fittings n the deck with the same style flat adjusters as the rest of the rigging.
