Catalina 30 Rimouski
Bonjour !

Merci
Orizon

According to Google translation: "Hello! The season is coming fast here in Rimouski, Quebec. I did completely redo my original YSM 12 (1979) my Catalina 30. ($ 5000 ...) But it is as new and restore new life to my boat, while still retaining the original. Here is my question: Can I replace it with my balm? Is there a risk of damage?"

I think he's asking if he can use the boom to lower the engine into the boat? Funny, I was wondering if i could raise my outboard with the boom on my 222.

For a $5000 investment.... I'm renting a cherry picker, or a front end loader.... or something like it.

There is a video on the web somewhere showing an A4 being removed with the boom from a C27. If going that route I would use the main halyard attached at the boom near the pick point to take the load and not rely on the topping lift.

I found an engine manual for this engine:
http://www.ship468.org/boats/Catalina30/YSM12/Chapter1 - General.pdf
At a dry engine weight of 130-120kg (286-264lbs), the boom (supported by the topping lift on the end and the main halyard strapped at mid-point) should be easily sufficient to lift the engine.

If the boat is on land, make sure the hull is well supported on the side you're lifting. Perhaps add an extra boat stand near the lift point?

JR LOL he probably meant internet translators.
This is what goggle translator turned into..
"Yes, you can I thought you asked, increase your engine with your arrow. Make sure you use the main halyard and topping lift winches via mast to increase your engine, using one person on each winch awareness. If you can not tighten against your topping then use your jib halyard to lift the engine. The YSM 12 is a lighter engine, weighing about 300 pounds, so it is not too heavy for the arrow. Although you will provide to drag the engine off the motor mounts to pave the way main hatch. Fortunately, our trap 30 C is so great that you drive a truck through it. Good luck and you look back from injury."

Just what do you mean by that? At least I gave him a response in French.
No, I wasnt referring to what you wrote, I think the main point came across, but certain words, like boom, come out different. He originally said baume, which it turns to balm. It was only by googling baume that I found beam. Going the other way, boom comes out something else. Then too I wonder if Quebec french is different from the old country, etc., local culture terminology. I just meant the translator programs arent 100% right.

I dont speak french, so must (for the time) rely on these translators. But I do not as yet feel comfortable they are that trustworthy. I would hate to have something come out the wrong way, wars have started over stuff like that, lol.

Cool. Maybe soon we'll have a translator app on our smart phone with voice recognition, lol

I was going to just say that you could tie all your halyards to the boom at the lift point to take the weight, or even spread them some. Just watch that the lines dont stretch and the boom starts bending.

Oui,

I replaced a westerbeke mxp 25 with an mxpb25 using the boom. Lots of room. 6 guys from the club picked it up from the back of my truck using 4x4's run through the pallet, carried it onto the dock right beside the boat. From there we created a purchase by attaching a block to the lifting ring on the engine. It was a few years ago but I think we ran the main halyard to the block on the engine, then up to a block on the boom, and back to the attachment point on the engine. We also tied off the topping lift and the spin halyard on the boom close to the lifting point. By creating the purchase and having some friends guide the engine itself I don't think we even had to use a winch. By repositioning the block on the boom it was easy to move it in through the hatch once the engine was on the boat.

This ended up being the easiest part of the entire replacement.

Il etais beaucoup des ans depuis je parle francais mais si vous souhaite 'email me off list' pour mon nombre et je vais essayer en francais

Randy
