Need a Vang?

I've had a few posts here about my, new to me, 86 Cat 27 Tall Rig. This have mid boom sheeting. It does not have a vang. However, is it really needed? It has 3 bails on the boom and the last one is about where one would mount a vang to the boom. I have seen pictures of other C-27's with mid boom sheeting and a vang. I'm sure opinions will vary.

Nope, opinions do not vary. A vang is an essential piece of gear. For a soft vang, it's a simple four part tackle. Buy one right here on SBO.com. For a rigid one, go to Garhauer.

Ask your self what happens when the boom is swung out to the side, beyond the range of the traveller. What holds the boom down then.....not the mainsheet, it's no longer pulling down vertical.... however, the vang connects to the base of the mast, not the traveller, so no matter what position, the angle between boom and mast is maintained.
