I have access to a Lewmar V7oo windlass with a gypsy that takes 1/4 in chain and rope what are the opinions of this windlass for my Catalina noting that nearly all anchoring will be in reasonably good weather

I can't exactly remember what the anchor locker on that version of the C30 is like, but I think something like this from Cruising Outpost would work.

Maybe it would help if you posted a photo of what your anchor locker looks like now.

Good luck,

Jesse

Sorry can't post a picture boat is 800 miles away but locker is not so deep so I will have to mount on deck and it has a split hatch down the middle. Really looking to see if this windlass with 1/4 in chain is big enough

A good general rule is the weight of the anchor and ground tackle when fully deployed should not exceed 30% of the maximum rated pull of the windlass. The issue I see with the v700 or something similar is how are you going to get the discharge cute of the windlass over the rope locker. A common alternative is to use a vertical windlass mounted horizontally inside the chain locker with the rode dropping off the gypsy right into the locker.

Wiil not fit in chain locker and I have a way to mount the V700 really just need to know if 1/4 chain and this windlass is big enough for a 25 lb anchor and 30 ft 1/4 chain

I asked the Lewmar guys about this at the boat show last year.

I think that they recommended that you are not lifting more than 25% of the rated capacity in your normal anchoring depths. The V700 unit is rated for 175 lbs. If you are typically anchoring in 30' of water you can figure 1#/ft of anchor chain (30#) and maybe 35# for your anchor you would only be lifting 65# so you would be well within you limit.

You may want to check with Lewmar and see what they say.

For what you have there it will be more than powerful enough. There is not too much chain there. Make sure you use large enough wire to run from your batter to the windlass.
