I am about to splash latter this week. I stopped into West Marine to pick up new zincs for the shaft. As far as I can recall a Cat 30 (1989) has a 1" shaft. Therefore I would need (2) 1" replacement zincs. Since I had lost one during the season I removed the existing zinc, but it looked slightly smaller than the replacement. I did a dry fit of the new 1" zinc and it looked good. I assume the yard that did the replacements last year could have used the wrong size. Is 1" correct for this boat?

Just put your micrometer on the shaft and measure

it just to be certain that it is not 25 mm.

My C30 has a 1 inch shaft

Mine is a 1987. I just installed a new shaft zinc prior to putting her in the bathtub. It was a 1" diameter shaft for sure.

Ross is right...

A few years ago, I was buying my annual zincs and they were out of the 1" size I needed. You would think the boat stores would have million of this size as it must the the most common one used. So...I bought a 25 mm zinc thinking that 2.54 cm = 1 inch and it may fit. No way. I was lucky to be able to return it and the get the right 1" size a week later.

Warren that problem cuts both ways. The 25mm zinc

is too small for a one inch shaft and 1 inch is too big for a 25 mm shaft.

Never heard of a 25MM shaft. Is that a euro thing?

How about the prop taper, or have they re-invented the whe, er, prop too?

nieghborhood that needed a new Cutlass bearing inch sizes won't fit needed metric . Don't know about shaft tapers.

its a WORLD thing - except USA of course. Remember the Metric America act of 1975. "Twenty-one years ago, a National Bureau of Standards1 report to Congress, A Metric America: A Decision Whose Time Has Come, described the United States as an island in a metric world."

Donalex, what is wrong with the

American system! You English give it up and it is ours now! The US and Kenya are the only countries smart enough to know that a system based on the size of a Kings foot is better than a system based on the number ten!

shaft sizes can be a hassle!

a few years ago my friend had an elite 324. built in France. needed cutless bearing replacement. yard replaced it and didn't realize it was a metric shaft and replaced it with std 1" cutless bearing. needless to say it had to be replaced a short time later as there was a lot of slop even though it was close. catalina's are American built and it will definitely be an American size 1"

This much really is 6" ladies..

Ya'll stop..your giving me a headache.Luckily I live in Texas where "this much really is 6" Ladies".On a serious note:just ahead of your stuffing box and right behind the Trans there is a bit of the Prop Shaft thats exposed..you can measure it for the shaft size if you dont know it...micrometer is best way..if there is any doubt about metric vs. inch. And its not uncommon for you to lose zincs during the season from vibration and such.Put them on tight (I like to use atleast 2) and ahead of the outter bearing that way if your shaft fails it does'nt fall off.
