Owner of a 1978 H30. I am aware of the oval zinc located on prop shaft which I replace every season. I have recently been told that most boats also have a zinc bar (similar in shape and size to a pencil) located in the engine compartment to protect the metal of the engine. Any truth to this, and if so where should I be looking within the compartment?

Yanmar?

If you have a fresh water cooled engine, then you won't have any. Otherwise they could be anywhere on the engine block and hard to find unless you know what you're looking for. Check with your mfg dealer and they can point them out to you. A Yanmar service manual will tell you where, also. What model engine do you have? This will help anyone else who reads this post. Good Luck.

yse12 ?

i would expect you have a yse12 or a ysm12, in either case it is located in the water manifold (rectangular casting at the top of the engine) you will find it adjacent to the thermostat housing .

Two little suckers

I have a 82 H30 with a Yanmar 2GM raw water. There are two zincs. One is at the back of the engine near the top. The other is on the left side looking in about in the midde of the engine. If they have never been replaced you will only see a stub that the zinc was on and you will need to get small tools and get the particles out of the engine through the zinc holes before you put the new ones in. The plugs holding the zincs will also probably be hard to loosen. Use pentrating oil before you start. After you do this one time if you change them on a regular schedule it should only be a 15 min job.
