For the first time I am leaving my O' 23 in a marina in a slip (she has always been on a mooring). Do I need a sacrificial zinc for the boat? I am not running shore power and always raise my outboard at the dock. Thanks

zinc

if there are NO metal parts to contact the water then a zinc may be a waste, but if your rigging is grounded, swing keel bolt, lightning etc., then it would be necessary. would also help with grounding of vhf for better radio...

"Hot" Marinas

I think to have serious problems with galvanic corrosion in a marina you would have to be connected to shore power. I believe the electrolyte "cells" are formed because the boats are hooked together via the shore power ground. Then it's the least noble metal that goes first - sacrificial zincs followed by aluminum outdrives, then propshafts and propellers. So it's probably a good idea to get your outboard up out of the water in any case, just to be sure.
