ka lunk ranaway because of injector pump issues.
we had black smoke for a while, increasingly more each passage. the final passage from zihuatenejo to barra was double time long..instead of usual 40 hours for 200 milles, took me 80, and mid way we had black exudate from water exhaust as well as hugeous black smoke. no oily looking blueish smoke, no white..only black. yes i checked hard.
ok we looked found nada, continued to barra. anchored and did routine maintenance post passage..change oil, etc.... that was mid-may... june i went to go into marina, runaway happened. to stop it we cracked all injectors.
it was not blow by, which CAN also cause runaway. this was fuel delivery problems....
in zihuat my repair guy found we had black fuel in return line....ok
so he changed oil and kept watch...
iff the runaway had been blowby caused the silencing would have been to properly shut off air to engine...remove air cleaner mushroom and place a tennis ball onto hole to shut down engine. (do keep one handy)
we cracked injectors. all 4 . it worked.
i still had oil in crankcase and i still had fuel in fuel line when silenced.
i believe that if we had torn her down immediately i would still have engine function.
i am no longer using same repair guy.
the flywheel will not turn even with larger pry bar and bigger hammer.
i took off head the other day and i found a machine shop to which i will take each part to be machined.. first head then block.
monday we take head into machine shop.
YAAAAYYYYYY!!!!
then when we have block denuded i take that into same machinist for reworking and potential use or replacement, depending on the machine shop worker and his words.
what we found when opened engine was clean cylinders without scoring, but 2 had rust..the aftmost 2, closest to the exhaust. there is no lipping on pistons and the sleeves are not scored. we may have some good fortune in this disaster, but it will take some time to sort.
meanwhile here i sit.. if anyone is coming here, please bring me rebuild kit stuff..i need hoses and gaskets!!!
there is a way to place a tennis ball and a wrench..mine is green..to shut er down immediately. the shorter the time in runaway condition, the better your chances of repair vs injury to person or replace engine..can also sink boat when parts fly at warp speed thru block and hull. we were fortunate this did not detonate nor overheat on gauges.
