This question is for YSM 8/12 (and similar raw water-cooled) Yanmar owners.

The other day I noticed that about every ten seconds a tiny drop of water is spit out of the water pump scupper (slot in housing between the impeller end and the bearing end). There are no over heating problems and the water flow is within specs (about 10L/min) at cruising speed. Is this a cause for concern?

Is it time to rebuild my water pump?

Sounds like the lip seal is going out.. You are right, time to rebuild. Good to think about new bearings and a new seal. Clean up the shaft with fine emery cloth and look at where the seal lip was running on the shaft. If there is a groove that catches on your thumbnail after cleanup, replace the shaft too. If you have an oil side seal, replace that one too. Good luck with the rebuild.
