I have allways been attracted to 51' Formosa ketch. Mostly for traditional looks and there rep for being a solid boat. As a proud owner of 1998 passage 450,how many of you would trade or sell your current Hunter for a older vessle such as the Formosa. And for those in the know, what is the cost difference per year between the Hunter and the Formosa.

Older boats can cost more because they may need upgrades, so perhaps a surveyor could tackle that.

Looks and Performance

I've always liked the looks of the William Garden designs like the Formosa Ketch. What has always put me off is the displacement. With a displacement over 50,000 pounds, it's more than double your Hunter. In anything less than a full gale, it's not going to be very fast under sail. While I would not describe myself as in the know about their maintenance costs, I would guess they could be spendy, especially since they haven't been made in about 25 years. But they do look really nice. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5
