I have your book, and on page 49 it gives a six step procedure for fresh water maintenance. My boat is a Catalina 320, the manual that came with it has the identical six step procedure except for step number one. Your step one says to mix 1/2 cup Clorox or Purex with one gallon of water for each five gallons of capacity of the tank. The Catalina manual says to mix 1/4 cup of same to one gallon of water for each 15 gallons of capacity. Bottom line is your formula is six times stronger than Catalina's. Both state that they comply with section 10.8 in the A-1 192 code...etc, etc. My thinking is that your formula is very strong and getting the taste/odor out after the 'cleaning' may be a problem. Is one a typo/incorrect?

I suspect there may be a typo in the Cat manual

'Cuz the instructions calling for a ratio of 4 oz bleach to 5 gal water have been in my files since 1989. You'll find the same instructions on a bunch of RV sites too. Typos and/or misstatements are NOT uncommon in owners manuals. There are a couple of lulus in the Jabsco manual toilet instructions.

not to mention....

Bert: This is not to mention that you are 'shocking' the tank. You really want to kill anything and everything in there. Once you pump all of the water out of the system and refill it with fresh water and flush this out again, there will be a very small concentration left. We also fill our tank with a Culligan screw on filter on the hose. This is just a method to be sure that the water is clean going in. It helps eliminate other contamination down the line. We are pumping our water from a well that goes into our tanks.
