your advice solicited

I am going to retire next fall. Currently co-own a Hunter 31 (1986) and have lots of Chesapeake Bay experience. I am considering taking 2-3 months off in September 2004 and helping somebody move a boat south on ICW. Any ideas on how to get a 'berth'?...what do's and don't apply?...suggestions on cost sharing, financial expectations? Thanks, Joe

Joe. you did not give alot of info but for what it is worth I will give you my two cents worth. First if the boat move is being done "for hire" (i.e. delivery) and the captian is being paid I would expect to have all out of pocket cost paid for by the boat as well as some personal compesation for you time. If this is to help a friend and you are doing this out of kindness or for the adventure of it there are no hard and fast rules,I would think that the boat owner is responsible for out of pocket cost as you are doing him or her a favor acting as crew.  If this is just a adventure for you, it could be all cost out of your pocket,and if that is so why not just make the trip in your own boat. At any rate I would have a clear understanding of what is expected by and from you before commiting to crew. Think of it as is it work or is it pleasure? What ever you work out enjoy the trip and have fun!

where do you keep your boat?...Many people leave Tidewater in the Fall; going down the ICW... check with the dockmasters at the local marinas (like Bay Point, Taylors Landing, Willoughby, Hampton, etc.)for people who might be looking for crew; and/or just give them your name, # (& some personal info), and ask them to keep you in mind when they hear people talking about making the trip....

Me an' my dawg Sinbad have made the trip twice from RI to FLA since I retired. If your co-owner will allow, take the boat to FLA for the winter, then your co-owner can come down and have some fun sailing also.
