Here's the specs: LOA 35.8, LWL 29.11, Beam 12.5, 11243 displacement, 4078 ballast, 49.25 mast, 530 sail area, 4'2" draft. Question: How is she going to fare in the windy conditions of SF bay with the shallow draft? Anybody have any first hand experience with something similar? obviously, the 5'1" keel would be better, but thats not whats up for sale. Edit/Delete Message

handle just fine

mine is 17,000 lbs (lwl and loa is irrelevant) with a 5,400 lbs keel (wing) and a 60' mast. The exta 10' of mast make a hugh different with mechanical advantage against the keel and my keel per displacement is about the same, so I'd have to say that your boat, much like mine, will bend but not break. In other-words, you will reach maximum performance at a higher heel angle then normal fin keel boats but the heavy keel will keep it safe (the boat has to heel a lot before the heavy keel can take effect). Summary...learn sail trim and not be afraid of 25 degree heel and you will love the boat.

wet your gunwale

Thanks Franklin, great info. BTW, I wanted to describe the boat without giving a brand, hence the LOA and LWL.

The ratios

Based on the performance ratios for your boat (that's about all we have to work with without a model): D/L of 203: This boat leans more toward performance than comfort, but it's not extreme. The Catalina 380 is 216, and the new Hunter 44 DS is 170. Length to Beam 2.86: This boat is beamy - lot's of form stability - good for high winds and low waves. SA/D 16.9: The high side of average. No advantage for the Bay where I assume you will often be reefing. Capsize screen 2.23: The wide beam and light displacement means that this boat may never right itself if capsized. OK for the Bay, but this is definitely not a blue water boat - don't go outside (or through) the Golden Gate! Comfort Index 17.0: This is not a cruising boat, especially for the long legs outside on the west coats. Probably not an issue for banging around the bay. David Lady Lillie

No Ocean?

Interesting responses. FYI, this boat was single handed across the atlantic, although I do not know what the weather or swell was like.
