You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner...

Someone nearby me was selling a 1985 Capri 22 fin keel tall rig on a trailer for $2000, boat motor and trailer. I called as soon as I found it online (4 hours drive away)... told him had cash in hand and wanted the boat that I'd pay for it sight unseen (it was already floating at the time)...

Darned luck someone had already told him they were looking at it the next day and he felt "obligated" to give them first crack at it...

$2000? REALLY?

Sorry haven't seen ANY of these boats in such bad shape that boat/motor/trailer would only be worth that. I understand that if it's JUST a boat, and you need to move it and it doesn't have a trailer, but that package deal usually makes it a no brainer. Maybe its just me. I figured for $2000 I could donate it to our local sailing school if nothing else (you know while I took time to find my "next" boat).

Lord, that's cheap. If it floats it's got to be worth at least 2000

Re: You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner

Well;

I purchased my 2nd Capri 22 in January. # 427
Cost $2,000. It was a distress sale and I did the seller a favor by buying it quickly.

1985 SRWK race package; 150, 120 + a 140 on the roller furler. + Trailer.

With a very new electric start Tohatsu 8hp. ( Which I sold for $975 in February, that buyer got a deal as the motor only had 20 hrs on it.)

I kept the spinnaker, pole, & motor from my original Capri 22, #297.

My older boat was "cleaner" and basically in better shape. But for $1025 I did OK.
Now I have something to work on in my retirement.

I sold # 297 for $3,500.

These boats should definitely be worth more than this.

I paid $1225.00 for #281 in October 2008. Had a Nissan 5 hp outboard that started right up. Still runs. The boat needed simple end of season cleaning. The bottom coat was rough. It was sailable the day I bought it!

Apparently you guys shop better than me (or negotiate better not sure which)...
I bought Gallileo's Dance (that was her name and I didn't change it) dirty, but sailable... for $4000, boat/motor/trailer in 2011 and thought it was a bargain... I won't say what I sold it for, but suffice to say it wasn't $2000. I'd like to think I left it in pretty good shape too (improving it all the way around from how I bought it).

Re: You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner

I got mine on an eBay charity type auction. It was sight unseen other than photos, so there is always a chance of something not being quite as expected. But for the price, it was a chance I was willing to take.

Now I did have to modify the trailer from my O'Day 19 to support the Capri 22. I overestimated the height needed but the boatyard provided the additional keel blocks.

The Capri 22 has been my most favorite boat so far. The O'Day 19 is the simplest one to trailer, rig, and launch (it's on another slightly smaller trailer now).

Shnool, you'll be back with us soon! <wink>

Paid $1100 for mine without motor or trailer. It was a rental boat for Navy familys so needless to say; She's a bit rough. Pulpit smashed up, stanchions ripping the deck, bad hull paint job, interior is/looks sun baked yellow, the list goes on. Im building a trailer for her now to get her home for some serious work. I love my boat.

Re: You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner

You guys are safe... Just brought home a "new to me" 1982 S2 7.9, boat motor and trailer.
Lots of work to do to make this baby shine, but the hull is dry everywhere but the port cockpit seat (easy fix)... otherwise has 10+ sails (can't count them all). A really decent racing main, 3 spins, and several other sails...

Lots of the "right" stuff for it like the boom kicker, standard horizon instruments, newly faired rudder, and keel.

Just a couple pictures that I have for now, as I don't have lots of time to work on it and I JUST brought it home yesterday.

I was hoping to get the boat in for the last 2 weeks of the season, but I dunno I'll be able to scramble that fast. Hard to say, I can be QUITE motivated when it comes to sailing.

Re: You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner

If it didn't sidetrack me to buy a trailer for the last S2 7.9 I looked at... I'd have purchased this 7.9 for the price I sold my Capri 25 for (not bad in my book)... so now I have to sell this boat trailer, and maybe I'll have enough $$ to buy a nice Number 1 genoa. This boat DID come with a ton of sails, mostly tired, but still.

My sail club is awesome though, I was out of town, but I had no less than 5 people invite me out to sail with them for this weekend. I hear it was awesome sailing too, 20+ the whole weekend.

By the way, I have a line on a nice S2 7.9 inboard with a trailer in NJ... for a GREAT price, I get nothing out of the sale of it. Under $9k.

Re: You folks were nearly stuck with me as your newest owner

Fired up the outboard yesterday (I had to clean up the plugs, and fresh gas)... but otherwise started right up.
counted sails yesterday (reason I didn't have a fixed number, there were so many)... 17 sails, perhaps more (there are 2 more bags I didn't go through)
(2) good 155s, one racing quality laminate
(2) good 110s, one racing quality dacron (heavy)
(5) YEP (5) spinnakers... all symmetrical (2) light .5 oz (2) medium .6 oz (1) heavy .75 oz. I am guessing at the weights based on my prior ownership of spins.
(3) mains, one of them excellent race quality Doyle Boston Dacron, one Nice North Sails Dacron, with 2 full battens, the Doyle is loose foot, the North is shelf foot.

Found a boom kicker in good shape.
Spin pole
Whisker pole
Tiller
Forespar tiller extension
Flares in bubble plastic (sealed)... looks like they have 2 years left on them
Whistles
Air horn, with spare tank
4 fenders, 2 massive bubble fenders
Anchor/chain/rode, looks like 100 feet
first aid kit
2 extinguishers
fuel tank (metal go figure), that seems fully functional (obviously I cleaned it out).
5 winch handles (must have had a tendency to dump them in the drink)
half dozen extra battens
A tackle-box of extra parts (cotters, split rings, clevis pins, bolts, pins and such)
A cloth organizer pad with various tools crescent wrench, pliers, needle nose, hammer, etc.
2 multi-tools...

I am impressed, the boat was organized and maintained.

I can't get over the sails with it... I am astonished though that the laminate sails were folded... definitely contributed to ruining some of them.

This 155 was in decent shape

Spin 1

Spin 2

Spin 3

Spin 4

Spin 5

Again, nice to have "bonuses" like this.. all the spins look 100%. Not sure why so many, but I'll take it.
