Get your info straight...

Just so you know.......a mid 80's Catalina 30 in Ontario, which there are only two listed at the moment, are both listed for 45,000 and up. My friend bought one last week privately and paid $46,000 CDN for a Catalina 1984. So I am not making things up.... Boats are cheaper in the States but unfortunalely shipping costs are appx. $2,500 + we have to add GST and PST (14%) to a boat purchased in the US. So don't accuse others of pulling information out of the blue......

My first keel boat............

My first keel boat was a 1982 C-30. Bought it 8 yrs ago for $24k, sailed all over S.Cal, learned alot, had alot of fun and great times. Sold it 3 years later for $22k and moved up to a Hunter 376. It was the best $2k I've ever spent.

Designed to Sell

There is a TV show on HGTV called Designed to Sell. They put a little money and elbow grease into a house and make much more for the owners. The recipe applies to boats as well. Get the thing spanking clean and EMPTY IT OUT! NO one wants to see your dishes, or pans, or soap dispensers or whatever in the boat. Clear it out and clean it up. The boat should be ready to be bought and sailed away - turnkey.

Flipping a Boat

Flipping a boat depends on the deal and the popularity of the brand. Catalina, fortunately, enjoys a good reputation of worth in the after market. A boat must look appealing to provide comfort, be tidy and clean to show proper care and have systems that are operating or capable of repair. A flipped boat must also have a buyer in the wings. Never let a sincere person who expresses interest in your boat get away! Keep addresses and phone numbers. Always try and have someone say to you, "If you ever want to sell your boat, let me know." It is sometimes good as a buyer to wait for the right boat. Remember, the expense of your recreation with the boat is seldom recovered. Buyers appreciate the addition of all sail away items possible. Spare parts, tools, accessories, stainless screws and bolts, etc. Keep a listed inventory of everything that goes with your boat. Experienced sailors seem to know when it is time to sell. It may be the first week or the tenth year of ownership. A flip, breakeven or depreciated recovery. I have been lucky to flip two boats. A MacGregor 25 and a Catalina 30. Good Luck. When your remove the previous owners wall mounted objects the holes left though filled will always remind you.
