Yellow Diesel Jerry Can

Had a fuel leak from the engine fuel filter on my Yanmar 3GM (2003 H356) and about 2 gallons collected in the sump under the engine before the smell got to us. Pumped the diesel/antifreeze/gunk mixture into an empty yellow diesel jerry can. Here's my problem. How do I get rid of the stuff in the can and how can I clean the can. Local recycling centers (MD) accept engine oil and green antifreeze but I don't think they accept fuel. Assuming that I can legally empty the can, how can I clean the inside to that I can safely use it to carry extra fuel? Thanks in advance.

Take the fuel to your local fire department. They light things on fire all the time to practice their trade.

I would start with some Tide Laundry detergent in the bilge. It is REALLY good at removing grease/oil. Once you do a treatment with this and it is throughly flushed out, you can determine if you need something else. Simple Green, KO, Frebreze etc

As far as the can goes, don't worry about it. Rinse it out maybe a little detergent (if you think that it is important) and let it dry. The diesel is really not that clean most of the time anyway.

Yes, they do take diesel in the used oil tank (my company has the contract). Generally, we do not like to see AF in the fuel, but since your a nice forum contributor, I won't tell.

You could transfer it into oil containers and just give it to the oil recycle joint.....leave the diesel jug upside down into a container for a day it'll drain then just fill with diesel

I clean my diesel jugs w/a little detergent at the end of each season to keep things from growing. Perhaps excessive obsessive but isn't that the definition of a boat owner?

Last time I got diesel in my bilge I used Simple green concentrate and it worked great. I used some of the diesel to start my yard waste fire. Also my local dump will accept old fuel as well as oil and other hazardous liquids.

There are businesses, like auto shops, that use waste oil or diesel to heat with and they would probably be happy to take that off your hands.

I knew a guy who would take any diesel and filter it and use it in his work truck.
BTW I was just joking about dumping petro in the yard, I don't even have a yard.
I actually dump diesel I won't use in with used motor oil at the auto shop next door.
