the yard (new yard to me in michigan) shrunk wrapped my boat with the sails up and before it was winterised. they took down the shrink wrap, but when i took my jib down from the roller furler i noticed the sail has scorch marks from the heat wand. they use an outside contractor for shrink wrap. my question is ; what should i expect from the yard in regards to repairing or replacing the sail. i didnt order the shrink wrap to be done. they seemed a little miffed when i asked why my boat was shrink wraped already. any advise; ps. i havnt contacted the yard, they were closed when i noticed and i had to drive back to chicago thanks, mike

be firm

I recommend you be firm in expecting that they make it right, whatever the cost to them. Note I said firm, not obnoxious. That would give them an excuse to flip you off. Good luck.!

Nice move

Can you believe that anyone would get a torch near the sail? What sort of people do some of these yards hire? I would get a quote on a new sail and let them know you expect them to replace the sail. Even if you had ordered the boat to be wrapped most yards would leave it alone until you get the sails off. It is your fault for not getting the sails off right away. If the yard has limited space for boats in the harbor, you have to get the boat ready for haul out the same day that you arrive at the harbor. If you can't get it ready right away you have to let the yard know what your plans are. Some yards will do the work for you and charge you if you can't get it out of their way fast enough. Good luck.

In defense of the yard ............

they can haul boats almost any day but they have to wait for proper weather to shrink wrap a boat. It can't be done in wind or rain. Yards with space restrictions frequently wrap a boat before it is parked for the season where access may be a problem. I personally wrapped mine before it was winterized but doing it with the jib on was dumb. (adding a zippered access door is easy) Hopefully the damage to the sail is only on the UV cover. Get it to the sailmaker promptly.
