My recently purchased 415 O/I is fitted with a Yanmar 4JH2E engine. It recently developed a leak in the fresh water casing caused by corrosion. The engine has 2200 hours on it. There are no zincs anywhere on the heatexchanger. Is it possible to drill and tap a hole(s) to install a zinc to reduce this problem?

Zinc's in fresh water exchanger

Yes, you can drill and tap a hole to add a zinc. You must have one of only several that have had a corrosive problem. We have a '89 41 Classic, it has no zincs and is still very very clean. Also don't have a zinc on our 1986 and have never had a problem. We have the Yanmar 4JHE.Molly

Gotta Heat Exchanger Cap?

The zinc only needs to be bonded, connected electrically to the system, and in contact with the water inside the exchanger...Attach it to the bottom of the cap. Better yet, buy another cap that fits, attache it to that one. You can bond it with a simple 10 ga wire after gluing it to the inside of your cap. then it is easy to check, if it is protecting, it will disappear.
