My Yanmar ysm12 starter has been dragging a bit. Kind of a hesitation when I first push the starter button but then after another push or two it gets spinning. It seams to be getting worse so I went ahead and ordered a inexpensive one online.

Starting to second gues myself. I do plan on having the original one rebuilt and keeping it as a spare. I'm also realizing I should have ckecked the wires more thoroughly.

Any experience with these inexpensive starters available online?

Another question, I have removed the old starter and I notice it had a gasket. Is this necessary? The new starter didn't come with a gasket.

Thanks

Problem sounds like classic Yanmar wire connections problem.but now you have a spare. Gasket may be a spacer to make the starter gear align better. I would re-use the old one if possible.

It is the old adage, you get what you pay for. The most important point is reliability and the OEM will give you years of reliable service while the reliability of a cheap unit is questionable. These cheap units are usually recycled cases with the armature and the fields being mass manufactured to lesser specs than the OEM. The assembly procedures and the testing are not as precise nor as thorough. They do offer a replacement warranty but will not cover installation costs nor the aggravation a failure may cause. The starter is something that you do not want to have to remove while underway or during a trip so what I would do is go ahead and have the OEM unit rebuilt and then re-install it and keep the cheap one for a spare. Finally the use of a faulty component not identified during testing could result in engagement faults which could cause damage to other engine parts. A starter motor is something that does not make my list for spare parts as a good OEM unit can be quite reliable and provide a fair advance warning of a developing problem.

The starter to bell housing gasket is literally paper thin. My guess would be 0. 5 mm. It would not aid alignment or depth of throw for the starter pinion gear, I think it is there to allow for a snug tightening or anti-rattle. Use the old one or make a new one from sturdy paper. Soak in or rub on some old oil before fitting. Having the old starter repaired locally is a good move.

Installed the cheap starter and the engine fired right off. I see the old one is a factory original which I’m going to take in and have rebuilt. I notice it has some oil around the gear. I suspect I have a slow leak ...main seal?? Or from the tranny side??
