I was returning from a sail and had my engine running for about 15 min. All of a sudden my engine stalled and shut down. I had someone start the engine while I bled the bleeder screw next to the injectors. The engine started right up. After bleeding the air out, I tightened the screw. After I tightened the screw the engine stalled out again. In order to keep the engine running, I had to leave the screw open somewhat. Finally it stalled out and I could not restart it. Where should I start looking? What could be the problem? I suspect air is getting in somewhere. Could it be the fuel pump of filters? Help!

You ran low on fuel

Now you have to bleed the entire fuel system. Th e filter, the fuel pump, the injector pump and the injectors. Fun Huh.

I would change both filters for starters...

When the diesel fuel gets low in the tank ..there is sometimes sediment at the bottom that gets sucked up, thus clogging filters. I never let my tank go below half way. I have been told that the diesel will sometimes foam as it gets knocked around when tank is low.

There are basically only 2 things that will stop a diesel running; lack of clean fuel, or lack of air. Clean fuel means no air in it also. If you have sufficient fuel in the tank, air can enter from a variety of places without you seeing any sign of leak. Between the fuel tank and the supply pump is the suction side of the supply. As such, air can be drawn in at any loose connection with no trace of an external fuel leak. Check all connections between the tank and supply pump especially any inline fuel filters.
