Yanmar YSE12 Engine not reliable

Thank you in advance for your assistance. i have recently purchased a 76 Hunter 30 and got a really good deal on the boat. I was able to get the Engine started after rewiring the boat, but during the first sail, the engine started to pump (and i mean pump) oil out of the area around the governor shaft (opposite side from the fuel pump area) I was unable to restart the engine and had to be towed in. I have a mechanic going to check it out, but wanted to get opinions on secondary propulsion. Does anyone have an alternate outboard installed? What HP should I look at for the 30 Hunter?

Ask the mechanic about a rebuild. There are a lot of them old ones out there that are still running. The don't burn much fuel and you are better off out in the ocean with the inboard.

Outboards have many advantages but when the conditions are bad and you really need it, nothing beats having the propeller deep under the boat and the engine protected on the inside. On my previous boat the real problem was not thrust, but the fact that the outboard propeller would come out the water. (Steve and I both sail where the waves get big and the currents are strong).

Of course at this time of year a good motor mount bolted to the transom, and a 10 H.P. engine, would get you out without missing the season.

oil is still milky (boat took water during a rain storm and the engine took in some water) even after 2 oil changes. cant get all of it out so 2 more oil changes are scheduled

Well, It was supposed to be a beautiful day working on the boat, but nah. The water gods laughed at that thought.

So here is where I think I stand

Engine needs an overhaul, and i am thinking I will do it myself (I also rebuild jet Skis, etc)

Anyone have a good source for Yanmar parts, and anyone have a trick up their sleeve to easily remove the salt crust from the water passages. (other than a small wire brush)

ok, so the rebuild starts tomorrow, i was able to get all new parts that I believe I need through Torreson marine (Now TOAD marine)

Wish me luck

Also, T-hoff and the great guys there, here in Raleigh completely rebuild my 37 yr old head for me

Good plan to rebuild. I had a YSE8 in my previous boat which rebuilt over a winter in mybasement. It was rock solid after the rebuild for the remaning 12 years that we owned the boat.

No gotchas in particular. I did have to have someone make a puller to remove the old cylinder liner but other than that, it's a pretty simple engine.

To get the engine out of my boat was no mean feat. After removing the 4 bolts, coupling the prop shaft to the engine and removing the nuts from the 4 engine mounts, levered the engine off the engine mounts with two 2x3s and pulled it forward, out of its compartment using come-along until it sat on the cabin floor. The 2x3s acted as rails for the engine to slide on. Then we used the club crane to hoist the engine out of the cabin but I could have used the boom as well. What I do remember is that the engine was much heavier than I thought.

I did write an article about the re-build (more a narrative than a how-to) I could e-mail you if you like.
