I'm interested in a boat with this engine. Any reason to not buy one of these?

YSB is OK by me

I had YSB12 in my 75 H30 and it ran and ran and ran ... I think it would be the same block wit a smaller bore. Just sold the boat last year and it was fine. You could feel a little end play (in and out) on the crank bearings and also a little play in the rod bearing (slight rotating click). Always started easily and had plenty of power, I don't think it would stop unless it had no oil or water for an hour.

Great Engine

Reliable, simple, easy maintenance, for 8 hp. Drives our 7,000 point '77 h27 over 5 knots with a two bladed prop. You can have a knowledgeable mechanic look at it to be sure it hasn't been abused. David Lady Lillie

They're very reliable engines

Tom, I bought a '75 CS27 in 2001 and it came with a YSE8. BTW, the YSE, YSB, and YSM engines are basically the same. Production started around '71 with the YSE8, moved to the YSB around '76 and the YSM in '77 or '78. The B and M models did weigh less but I don't know where the cuts were made. Anyhow, my YSE8 runs fine and has been very reliable. There are 6 CS27s at my club with these engines and they are all going strong. Check that it starts within a couple of cranks of the engine, that's a good indication that compression (when you only have one cyl. it is easy to check compression) and the fuel system are OK. The only complaint I have heard is motoring speed.....some boats are a bit underpowered with only 8hp and can't reach hull speed. It appears that a prop upgrade can sometimes solve this problem. I am currently looking into 3 blade props. Kevin

Had a YSE-8 in a Dawson 26

which blew up just after the escrow expired. The engine had been horribly neglected and looked like a blob of rust but the surveyor passed it. One day it just stopped. A valve had broken off its stem and tore up the insides something awful. The rebuild cost $2,000, a lot less than a new engine, which would not have fit in the boat anyway. It then proved to be a very reliable and easy to maintain engine.
