Our 1983 Hunter 31 does not have a water temperature to tell us what is happening inside our Yanmar 2GMF. I installed an inexpensive gauge and a sending unit, but it was very inaccurate. Does anyone have a good working water temp gauge on a 2GMF (or something close)?

I INSTALLED A TEMP GAUGE

that I got from West Marine (page 237), a Teleflex unit for my Yanmar 3GMF. The gauge and sender cost around $35. I removed the warning buzzer from the panel and mounted it behind (I still hear it easilly) and put the gauge in that hole. I'm very happy with it, but the main reason you need a gauge is to discover trends. My temperature reads 165 degrees every time I run it for awhile at 2800 rpm. I watch it for any change; if it starts increasing I may have a filter getting clogged or??? So absolute accuracy is not all that important, repeatibility is the key.

One thing to keep in mind

Is that the installation of the sender has to be such that it does not get fooled by air trapped between the sender and the engine coolant. Simply installing a Tee in order to keep the warning buzzer as well as having the temp gauge can be a problem. I installed a temp gauge on my Yanmar 3GM by mounting the temperature sender directly to the water jacket that houses the thermostat and the sender for the warning buzzer. This required drilling a hole and tapping it for the sender pipe thread size. Works great and gives a good indication of what is happening to the engine temp as a function of load, etc. You can see the temp go up before the warning buzzer goes on, that is assuming you have a cooling problem and happen to be watching the guage at the time!

Water Temp Gauge On 2GM20F

Couple of years ago I installed water temp gauge on Yanmar 2GM20F. Installed so that original buzzer also operates. Works like a charm. If you want installation instructions and photographs send me your mailing address. Roy Mosteller SEA JOY (H-30 1991) roynjean@home.com
