how do you determine when valves on a Yanmar 3GM diesel require adjusting? what problems develop if neglected? what is involved in checking/setting valves?

Do it once a year. If you wait till something goes wrong you will be doing needless damage. Valve clearance affects compression and valve timing. Incorrect clearance causes needless wear and affects engine performance. Its a simple enough procedure that takes about a half hour.

Where are the vakves ...

located on the engine? I read my manual about valve adjustment but cannot find a picture that shows where the valves are actually located, especially since I do not see a valve cover like one would find on an automobile gas engine.

Valve adj. is scheduled for every 500 hrs.

Don: I think that the valve adjustment is scheduled for 50 hrs when the engine is new and then every 500 hrs. according to the Yanmar schedule. You should check the manual for the exact cycle. If your valves are too tight, then you can burn them. If they are too loose, then you can suffer poor performance. 100 hrs for oil changes and 250 hrs for fuel filters (this may depend on the purity of your fuel). PS: If you do not know when it was done last, I suggest that you get it done and keep track of it from here on.

The Yanmar Service Manual ........................

......... for 1GM10, 2GM20, 3GM30, 3HM35 and "SELOC Yanmar Inboards (1975-98) Repair Manual" are two excellent technical manuals to get you through any engine maintenance. Loads of pictures so you don't even have to know how to read. I'll bet that both these manuals together are cheaper than having a mechanic adjust your valves. And then you can do it every 500 hrs. for free. Best regards, s/v Island Hunter
