Yanmar 3GM30F / 1986 Hunter 34 My Yanmar overheated after about 1 hour of use on Saturday just as I was anchoring. Slowed to idle, checked seawater flow (good), belts (good), coolant reservoir (full) and shut down. There was some coolant in the bilge under the engine (maybe 1 cup), not sure of the source (overflow from reservoir?). Started getting dark so there was not much else I could do. Sunday morning my plan was to sail to my marina and use the engine just to dock. First I went in to check the prop to make sure it wasn't fouled (it wasn't). Sunday morning I started the engine (fine, first crank). The engine ran for about 5 minutes (no overheat) knocked, died, and won't restart. Now my plan was to sail to marina and get a tow. That worked out fine....sailed to within 100 yards of marina and towed in. Now I need to figure out what is wrong. Would it have started if it had seized from the heat the night before? No overheat warning Sunday morning. Had my family with me so I didn't really get a chance to dig into it yet. Thoughts?

Leaking Head Gasket?

Tom: Will your engine even turn over? Sometimes this can be that you have sucked coolant into the cylinder. Water will not compress and the engine will not turn over. If you can crank it over then you probably have something that is less severe, but just as aggravating.

Yanmar Trouble resolved

Turns out the overheating and the engine stop were unrelated. The fuel pump lifter was not functioning which caused the engine stop. Problem resolved with minimal $$ damage.

Where did the coolant come from?

Tom: Where did the coolant come from and why did your engine overheat?

There was a small leak at the cooling water drain cock. That led to the coolant in the bilge and the overheating (I hope). Runs fine now....but have not given it an extensive sea trial to make sure the overheating issue has been resolved.

Thanks Tom

Tom: Thanks, that is just a good reference point. There are two of those drains on the engine. Hope all else is OKAY for now!
