I have a 1989 H28 (not 28.5) equipped with a 18HP Yanmar diesel. The tachometer cluster is located on the starboard side of my cockpit. My question is relating to the toggle switch just to the left of the "start" button. Does anyone know what this does, or what position it should be on when running? When I flip it up a light comes on that says something about the water temp? Also, last week I took a tour of the Hunter plant in FL. I encourage any sailor to take the tour! Thanks, Matt s/v Wu-Wei

The switch has two functions 1)it turns on the instruments lights for night use and 2)it tests the engine alarm. I believe the down position is the all off position.

Sounds like

the warning light/horn test switch. Should be spring loaded so you have to hold it in the up position. When you push it up, the temp/oil pressure/charge warning lights should come on and you should hear the warning horn. Let the switch go, and the lights/horn should go off.

The 'Up' position is momentary (it won't stay there) and is to test the warning lights to be sure they are functioning. The 'Down' position stays there and illuminates the Tach for night operation. The 'Mid' position is the normal operation position. Each time you start the engine push the toggle up to test warning lights. Dick Carey S/V Puffin H-33.5
