For those of you out there who have attended the Yanmar School by Mack Boring what was your experience. I am considering going to this school in January and wanted some feedback from those who went before. I just want to do routine maintainance (oil changes, fuel filters, bleeding ect....), is the 1 day course sufficient or do I need the 3 day course. I know little about diesel engines and just want to feel more confident and take better care of the one I have now. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Travis

DEISEL EDUCATION

I attended the Mack Boring one day lecture and I would highly recommend it. I knew my Atomic 4 like an old friend but had never owned or worked on a diesel. At the begining of the lecture, we were asked what engine we had and the instructor was able to talk directly about the engines that the class had. It was well woth it and is very popular. Sign up early

Attended in October

I also had an Atomic 4 but little practical diesel experience. I attended the one day course which I found very imformative and gave me the confidence to do most all things necessary on my 3GM (Hunter 356) - saved about $400 just on winterization this year. The course was mostly in the classroom with only about 30 minutes in the shop where you get to look at the engine itself. In the classroom the instructor goes over the all the basics and all the do's and don'ts. Unfortunately I did not have the time to take the 2nd course, day 2 and 3, for the hands on experience which might have proved even more helpful. I think that if you have some mechical experience and a basic understanding of the diesel engine, then take the one day course first and make a decision regarding the balance after. Of course where you live may be a consideration. In my class in Union, NJ we had people come from as far away as CA, ND, VT and Martha's Vinyard. All those people stayed for the three days. I live 30 miles from Union so I may go back in the spring. Take at least the basic one day, it is worth it.

take the two course

Last Spring I took the two day course after taking the one day the previous year. The two day course is an excellant hands on learning experience. You spend most of the time in the shop learning all about what makes a diesel work.

Too bad they don't offer anything in Michigan

If anyone from Yanmar is listening...Blue Water Marine supply is your dealer...how about a 1 day seminar in Michigan!! I could really use it!

West Coast

I'd really be interested in taking a marine diesel class......anybody heard of one on the West Coast..preferably around the Olympia, Tacoma Seattle area?

I just finished a good course.

Don, et.al., I just finished a Marine Engine Maintainance course provided by the local USPS. The instructor is an owner and head of repair for a local car dealership. He also owns his own boat. The curriculum is pretty straight forward and covers , gas, diesel and outboards. I learn a lot and I had no background in this subject whatsoever. The instructor answer many personal questions about the different engines that were represented in the class. Cost was $35 dollars for the book and the test. It was an excellent course.
