Hello, I have a Yanmar sb8 tiny diesel engine in my sailboat. I recently noticed that it takes a little longer to get started when starting it up cold (by cold I don't mean winter weather ...just for the first time after a day or so..I am in summer weather here 78 deg. F.) At the beginning of the summer it seemed to "catch" a little quicker when turning it over. The starter seems to turn at the same rate. It runs very well at all speeds. If I turn it off and then try to restart in a little while, it starts right up quickly. Should I be concerned or just accept that it takes a little longer to get going at the first start? Thanks, John Cape Cod , MA USA

Start Up

John, I have the same engine, I beleive. Yanmar 1gm, 1977. I had the same problem after having the engine complety overhauled. What I found was I had a very small crack in the head. This was found during a winter season after sending the head out for reconditioning. A long story short it was a compression problem. Your problem rings of the same problem I had. I don't wish to scare you but I had to replace the head and injector.I got to the point that I couldn't get a start in 60 degree weather.I would give her a spray and she would start. No way to live. If your handy with your engine have a look. However, you will know this is not detecting by the eye. The crack was found by Mack Boring in Union, NJ. (Yanmar Dealer). I found a new head about a year ago and have another 200hrs on the engine and she runs like new. Give it a shot and speak to your local mech. Good luck. Peter

Peter, what did you mean by giving it a spray?

Was it hard to get a new head? What did they charge you for the overhaul? There is a mack boring dealer about 20 miles from me.

Spray

By spray I meen "ether"(I'don't know if I'm spelling that corectly) arousal. I would slide my engine cover back on my Hunter 27 and mist the air over the engine and then turn her over and she would start right up. This was recommened by my mech. until she was on the hard for the year at which time the head was taken off the engine and sent to Mack Boring for reconditioning. You know the story from there. It could be that the head can be reconditioned. In my case they found a crack and that was that. The total job was about $1,400.00 however, that included installation (which a freind did) and new injecter, cleaning and painting the engine, new hoses etc. The head itself was approx. $700.00 including injector. Hope this helps. Peter

I spoke to the local Mack Boring Dealer

today and they seemed to think that it may be loss of fuel prime over time due to a worn fuel hose or fuel lift pump. When I pull for the season, I think I will try a new fuel pump. The engine runs great other than the initial slow start when cold. It always starts. Thanks, John
