Additional starter solenoid?

One alternative that I've been mulling over: The solenoid DOES activate the pinion gear -- it gives a very solid "click". It just doesn't switch the battery current to the starter motor. What if I wired in an ADDITIONAL solenoid that would switch the current? The key switch would then activate them both: the original solenoid would engage the pinion gear, the new solenoid would get the starter motor going. Would this work? Or am I missing something.....

Yanmar solenoid

Doug; Have you tried having the solenoid rebuilt, maybe at a shop that specializes in diesels, like trucks or construction equipment? Just a thought, although it didn't work for my Perkins solenoid, but I could get the solenoid only, for two hundred bucks, shipped from FL to CA.

Doug, E-mail me thru this sight and I think I

might be able to help. I just spent 20 minutes responding and thought; 1. This is to long 2. I probably could do better by E-mail or phone, and 3. This darn thing will probably time-out or disconect before I'm done. Ray Bowles S/V Speedy.

starter

Just went through this . Try going to www.marinedieseldirect.com . I have a break down of the starter in my yanmar parts book . Ordered everything I needed , good service and good prices .Still trying to figure out why a starter would cost $500.00 dollares ,when i took it apart it look like a normal starter . Could not find any parts made of gold . Rob

Just buying a new one...

Torreson sells a rebuilt starter solenoid unit for $329 or so. While it's really annoying that I can't get JUST the solenoid (they used to sell them!!! Torreson posted here in January about "last-one-in-stock-and-no-more-available"), I just don't have the patience to mess around scrounging for bits and pieces. Besides, when I dismantled the starter I found some water and a whole bunch of rust. While the starter motor was still cranking just fine, I figure I might as well get a "fresh" one. (Where the water came from is another worry. Though I did notice that there was no gasket of any kind between the starter and the engine... and the lower bolt was not tight. Sigh -- dontcha just love buying an old boat???)
