It seems odd that you just want more power unless there is some other reason for re-powering. How heavy is your 20' boat? The 1GM on my 5,700 # boat isn't bad for power but I am re-powering for other reasons.
The Yanmar 2YM15 is most compatable among the new engines. The footprint is just 2-inches longer with the same width, so the engine mount should already be close. The clearance is only slightly different and you can get an L elbow instead of the U if height is a problem.
Your transmission is compatable already if it is in good shape.
I also looked into the Beta but found a new one to be more expensive than Yanmar even when just comparing the bobtail straight-up (engine - no transmission). But when you factor in the need for a transmission (because your kanzaki won't be compatable) the price won't even be close. When you have to buy the tranny, the cost is way out of the ball park. Besides that, the mounts are all different and the hassle isn't worth it.
Replacing Yanmar with Yanmar is easily the best option. If you want a 1GM that should be repairable, we can talk. I have minor problems and we plan on repair or re-build once it is out of the boat in a few days. Once the 1GM is re-bored, it has the same bore as IGM10 ... I spoke to the folks at Mack Boring about this. Mack Boring is a great source of info because they are the distributor but they can't sell a Yanmar to you direct ... you have to go thru a dealer and there are many in the area.
