I need an engine. I have a Seidelmann 30, and have an opportunity to buy a Yanmar 12hp. Is that big enough for the 30? It was originally powered by a 15.

OK.... here is my take ....12 hp is a 20% reduction from the manufactures spec engine. If it was up to me I would go 20% higher then the manufactures spec engine or at least the same hoursepower rating. Just my thoughts.....

You might get the boat moving but watch out for wind and current.

We have a guy in our club with a small motor and a heavy boat. He'll be screaming the engine trying to go in and out. Any cross wind, we'll be putting fenders out just in case. Pretty scary.

Just what I was thinking. I keep the boat at a marina that experiences strong tidal currents. Thanks for the input

second everyone's opinion here; I have a 12hp Yanmar in a Catalina 30 and its underpowered. Get a 20hp and you'll be glad you did.

The basic rule of thumb, and considering hull design, is that you need about 2 hp per 1k lbs of displacement. My guess is that your boat displaces about 8,800 lbs so you should be looking for an 18 hp engine ... or so. Depending on the prop chosen, you could probably get by with a Yanmar 2GM20F, but I don't think I'd go with anything smaller.
