Capn Jim, on another thread, questioned the validity of an add on eBay because the advertised QM diesel was out of production when the boat was built. I have run into this with my own boat - an '85 Nassau 34, built in Taiwan, with a 3QM. As CJ says, the engine was taken out of production in '80, yet that is what I have in my '85. I have confirmed this by comparing photos. Further, I have the original brochure for the boat and it lists the 3QM as the engine. One problem for me is some parts from Yanmar work and some don't. Filters - air, oil, and fuel - are stock 3QM. The impellar and water pump gasket are not from a 3QM and, are in fact, no where close to the ones Yanmar lists. At one point, I ordered a new water temp sensor, and the one I got had a different temp limit than the one in the engine. All these problems are solvable, but it seems like kind of a strange situation. I wondered if someone out there might have an explanation for this oddity.

Higgs, just a guess,BUT

you said that your boat was built in taiwan. My best guess is that they bought or had several engines in stock or bought from someone that had a bunch and installed them even though the engine was no longer in production at yanmar. it also could be that they were still in production for export to countries other than to the U.S. its a puzzlement that you would be getting odd parts if you are giving the dealer engine model and serial numbers. I know that this has happened with several tractor engines, but not nesc. yanmar. S/V Que Pasa?

We are looking at an engine that has been almost 30 years out of production or perhaps the wrong part was sent. It turned out my old sensor was OK anyways, so I did not follow up when I returned the new one. I suspect the same as you, Jim that the company came across some of these engines somewhere. It is a good engine and continues to run great w/o using oil.
