I did some shopping and it seems that Niemiec Marine has the best prices going for Yanmar parts. They are apparently restricted by Yanmar to the Eastern US. I do not see a Western US seller with prices nearly as good as theirs. Does anyone have a lead?

The Niemiec website appears to allow you to order online. I will check to see who is authorized to sell in west, but I doubt their prices will be as competitive as Niemiec. They sell Yanmar stuff for less than what charge for aftermarket. I have no objection to aftermarket as I don't beleive Yanmar makes a lot of what is branded as Yanmar, but I can't even find a good selection of aftermarket. For example, the foam air cleaner element for the 2GM20F does not seem to be marketed by anyone else.
A mechanic recently recommended to me to replace the air filter foam with a foam shop vac filter cut to size and glued in.

Stever, that's what I found when I was about to order from them. I looked at the Yanmar site and found their dealers here in the west, but their prices were nothing like what Niemiec has on their website for the same parts. That seems quite odd to me.
BTW, Tricia, that is exactly what I thought when I pulled the unit out. I made the foam filters for my shop vac. What I am not sure about is whether the foam used in shop vac filters is robust enough or has the right porosity for this application. I might see if the local auto parts store has a foam filter from which I can use the material to size and glue.

is a little place in Old Lyme CT. I bought my boat in CT five years ago and did some work before bringing her to ME. The prices I have paid to them are comparable to what I just looked up on Niemiec, some are a little better. I think they're just list prices, they usually match up with Torreson. They probably have the same territory limits, so this is only good for easterners.
Anyway, Dan in parts is real helpful & knowledgeable. No online ordering although he does respond promptly to email. I've stayed with them because of great service.

I am in Texas. I placed an order online from torrensen and they contacted me a few days later to let me know the order wouldn't be shipped. List prices were all I could find. There was a place in Australia that would ship to me that was lower than list, but with shipping it was a wash.
If you are really bargin hunting, you may be able to go to a local non marine diesel shop and ask them to order the parts from yanmar. They are authorized dealers and they don't have the "marine price" complex.

Interesting idea, Hermit. It would probably have to be a diesel engine repair facility since I doubt Yanmar would be willing to undercut its "authorized" dealers. This seems to be what Shorty accomplished. It happens that there is an authorized Yanmar dealer just a few miles from where I live. I'm going to check their prices since I would be relieved of shipping charges. BTW, did Torrensen give you a reason for refusing to ship? Are you out of their "authorized sales area"? A few of the more common parts have aftermarket equivalents, such as oil/fuel filters, impellers, belts. I suspect alternators could be adapated as well. Most gaskets are probably Yanmar only. Perhaps I will start a thread on that and see what our compatriots have compiled.

My engine is so antiquated that there are very few parts I can get that aren't made specifically for it. The gaskets are cheap anyway, it's not worth trying to cut your own. One of the main bearings was $160 for mine. Th reason why it cost that much is because there is nothing else that will fit.
I like the engine. It's a 12 horse single cylinder. I can hand crank it. It starts so easily. It will push my boat through chop at 5 knots. It is too loud though. I am concerned that travelling at 5 knots is not fast enough if I have to be in the ICW for weeks on end to get to Florida. 7 knots or more would be a lot better.
I bought another engine, a 2QM20. I got a deal. The only downside I can see to that engine is it's heavy. I pulled the head, it looks to have been rebuilt not too long ago. I will tear it down and check all the tolerances, probably rering it, and do the clutch. It's also too big for my boat dimensionally, but I can deal with that. But I would rather be chugging along a 7.3 knots on my way to Bimini than 5 knots.

Hermitt, The Catalina 30 has a LWL (load water line) of 25 feet. So the hull speed is defined by the approximate formula of S=1.34(LWL**1/2) or the square root of the load water line times 1.34.
So 5 times 1.34 is 6.7. This means the maximum speed you can expect to drive your boat under power is about 6.7 knots. It is probably not wise to crank your motor to full hull speed at all times. i usually try to run my 35 at about 5.3 knots. It will seemingly cruise forever at that speed, it is a sweet spot for the motor where vibrations are minimal (motors have natural frequencies where you get more vibration at some RPM's) so don't expect to get 7+ knots on your Florida trip. Surfing down waves you can get a lot more speed I've actually seen over 12 knots out at sea in large waves, but cruising down the canals on the ICW 5 to 6 knots will be about it.
