I am being advised by someone I consider an expert to use only genuine Yanmar oil filters on my 4JH-HTE. Has anyone had a problem on a Yanmar engine with a quality, name brand (Fram, Purolator, etc.) aftermarket oil filter?

It's a relief valve issue as I recall. I use Baldwin filters exclusively. It's what you see on most of the industrial and trucking engines around here.
Not a money saver either way. I use Fram because they are convenient to buy. Wally Woild has 'em and you can get the Shell Rotella T there at the same time, both at good prices. The Fram has a relief valve set at 12 psi and does have an anti-drainback valve as in the Yanmar marketed filter. The Yanmar relief is set at 12 or 13, I can't remember which.. don't use the lowest line Frams since they don't have as much filter media in 'em their Tough Guard or Xtra Guard filters work fine, but compared to the official Yanmar filter, there is no real cost savings.
How often do you change your oil and so how much money do you really
save and when living in NY I got filter from Yanmar dealer I think Torreson I think on the internet and now get mine Yanmar filter here in Ft Myers.
I don't need to worry at all.

I've been using Fram oil filters for the last 10 years and I know the PO used them too. No problems that I'm aware of from that.
Where I have been using Yanmar filters is at the secondary fuel filter. Don't know what else would even fit there. The primary fuel filter is a spin-on Racor.
