Yanmar oil consumption

Nice N Easy

I am wondering about the oil consumption on my 2QM15 Yanmar compared to others. It is a 1980 model with a little under 500 hrs. I am burning approx a pint between changes. ( 100 hrs. ) Is this in line with other engines like this one. I am more curious than anything, as I in no way consider this excessive.

That is within reason in my opinion.

That is a very reasonable ammount. Is it a rebuilt motor with 500 hours or the original with that time? A properly cared for diesel motor is good for well over 6,000 hours unless it is run at idle for long periods like done when charging batteries. My experence has been with farm equipment and they are run long and hard.

Oil burner?

A pint is about average for an engine of that age and condition. Just check it and top it up each time before you use it. Also, check the belts too while your there. You could also have a small leak..fuel pump base gasket, oil filter seal, oil pan? With an engine that only holds two quarts you have to be viligent in your checking of the oil and keep a few spare quarts aboard.

About right

I ran a 1980 2QM15 with perhaps 1,000 original hours on it for the past ten years. It would begin to burn a very little oil towards the end of the sailing season (maybe 50 hours). I assume it was that the oil was getting a little dirty. However, I never had to add more than 1/2 quart over the course of the entire season (4-5 months). The engine holds about 3 quarts and Yamnar recommends straight 30W HD.
