Hi All, I need to get copies of my “one and only” Yanmar ignition key, have struck out at all the usual places; hardware stores and Wal-mart. No one has blanks for these keys. Does anyone know where I can get copies made in the Richmond and/or Deltaville area? Thanks, Jim R.

Think you have to go through Yanmar...

It's been discussed here before, you might try the archives. Or call Norton's there in D'ville.

I don't know about your area, but I found a blank that would work at Home depot- the Yanmar keys are all the same, so you could also get some from a yanmar dealer for $$$$

try almost any small key

I use the small key from a master padlock set...almost any small key or small screwdriver will work the "key" set they use. that is why you shouldn't rely on the key as an anti theft device...have another power shut off switch to the key inside the cabin where it can be locked.

Extra keys

I keep a spare key taped to the bottom of the bucket in the pedestal, just in case. I also keep a car key inside the gas pump door. Chrysler very kindly has a little nook there for just such a hideway, and duct tape keeps it from falling out. Yanmar keys can be ordered from any ships store or yard. They're universal. Makes you wonder why more sailboats aren't stolen, until you realize that theives aren't the sailing class.

Yanmar Keys are uncut

They look like they have a cut, but they don't need to be. I understand that Cole locks/keys have a blank that will fit. You can use a screw driver if you have to, but be careful. I had to do that once and ruined the ignition and had to buy another one.

My key broke off

in the switch (with some help from a foot!). Replacing the switch was very quick and easy, and it came with two new keys. The local Yanmar distributor carries them in stock. If you can't find a key, you might conder a new switch.

LOL, so did mine......

Both of my keys have broken off in the ignition, I was able to retrieve the cut ends and remove them, and now the stub that is left works just fine! My Yanmar stubs have #120 engraved on them. Engine turns over with just about a quater of an inch of cut left <G>.

I got my generic spare off the boat, it's an ILCO key that has x69 and yh37 on it-probably $0.75 at the harware store

Ingnition

I had no keys after purchasing an older boat, I simply pulled the ignition switch out, just four screws and three wires. Bought a new ignition switch at the local marina and replaced, took me five minutes and I'm not very mechanically enclined. Option just in case!

Feet and Keys

In order to avoid that problem, we remove the key from the ignition and place it over the engine shutoff handle (kill switch). Our keys are on a floater with a short length of thin line. Keeps from kicking the key with the feet - and one of our two keys is slightly bent from an earlier incident. Easiest thing to do would be to just get a new key switch with a"normal" more easy to find key, or take it out altogether with an inside switch for power. Only downside there is wiring the fuel pump separately. Stu
