I am trying to locate a source for a replacement key for a Yanmar 2QM15 diesel engine. The local locksmiths cannot locate a matching blank. Any suggestions for a source?

Try another similar sized key

On my pannel, I found that any similar sized key works to start the engine. Maybe it is the age of the key/lock system that lets it work, don't know, give it a try.

Dealerships

There is probably a Yanmar dealer or factory authorized service mechanic somewhere in Milwaukee who would be happy to simply give you a new key. Ask there first.

Try this

I have a Yanmar 2MG20(?) on our O'Day 302. When I bought the boat about 16 months ago, the Yanmar key was bent. I asked the previous owner about it and he laughed and told me that "anything...even a screwdriver would work" to start the engine. I haven't tried a screwdriver -- but it suggests that Paul F's response about trying any similar sized key might just be the ticket. Good luck.

I replaced mine

I went to the marine store and replaced the Yanmar key switch with a weatherized conventional on-off-start key switch. Like you have in your car. Now I don't have a separate start button and use that hole with a switch to power my GPS. It's been working fine for 8 year now.

Keys

Not sure about the 2QM15 Yanmar, but I believe that all keys for the 2GM20F fit all of those engines. Ask a friend with a Yanmar if you can try his key in your engine.... Also, most Yanmar dealers, and brokers who sell boats with Yanmars (i.e., Hunter etc.) will have lots of extra keys.

yanmar keys

The previous comment about using a screwdriver is correct! In my experience, they're all the same, and any yanmar dealer can get you one. I did find a matching blank at home depot, so you could borrow one and have it copied

Yup,

don't think of them as keys, but as levers for turning the contacts. Any lever that 'levers' will work.

Yanmar Skeleton Key

Rick, All the Yanmar engines I know of use the same 'key'. Warren has it right. Happy Thanksgiving to all MATES here on this great educational forum.

Rick, how is your 2QM15

I have the same engine, also in a Crown 34. Have you have any major issues, tip to pass along etc? David

Yanmar Key - 2QM15

David, The Yanmar 2QM15 works flawlessly. It is really the little engine that could. We purchased the boat last summer and it was running a little rough and finally stoped running. TUrned out that we had water in the fuel. After pumping the water out of the fuel tank, refilling with new deisel fuel, we bled the fuel lines for water and the engine started right up. Now before we start it up, I drain a little fuel out of the ware trap and it runs like a charm. Rick

Since we sail in Lake Michigan, we can use raw water cooling.
