For those of you who have had issues changing the impeller on a Yanmar JH engine, I have a solution for some of you.
We installed an access door on the port side of the engine box. This gives us a clear view of the impeller access plate. We have also installed a SpeedSeal over to make this a little easier too.
I have a bent nose needle nose pliers that allow me to pull the impeller after remove the plate. Then I used some Super Lube teflon grease on the impeller shaft, spline and housing to make reinstalling a little easier.
I then tied a wire tie around the impeller vanes to make the installation a little easier. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes with the access door in place and I did NOT need to remove the starter.
The impeller is 1.25" and the clearange between the starter and the impeller housing is 1.5" so there is not a lot of room to work, but it does work.
