After over a year of looking for a "good old boat" I recently found a really nice 1978 Hunter 27 with the Yanmar 9 hp single cylinder engine. Unfortunately, I have no documentation on the instrument panel. In fact, I have no instruments. There are 3 red lights above the ignition switch that are not labelled. and there are two (2) covered holes where instruments should be (engine hrs. and temp? or amps?) Two questions: 1. Does anyone have any info on what the lights mean? (they go off when the engine starts) 2. What instruments am I missing and where can I find them? That's for any help you can give. John D

Left hole: Tachometer Right hole: ? lights: low oil pressure; high water temp; low amp charging proplem. this is what I have for now. I'll go to my boat and look in the Manuel. It specifies all models from the 1gm; 2gm; 3gm. I'll email tomorrow.

Temp gage
I have the same light cluster. For me, the only information that is important is the engine temperature. So, a mechanical temp gage was added. I used a "sunpro" from auto zone, but there are many others out there. You can hang on other after market gauges if you like. It's the old cost benefit thing.

Yanmar has two different control panels for the 1GM or 1GM10 engines. One has a tachometer the other one doesn't. The large hole on the left is for the tack, the smaller hole to its right is for the buzzer (audible alarm). When you turn the key two lights should go on as well as the buzzer. Oil pressure and charging system. As the engine is off there is no oil pressure and the alernator is not turning so the panel is warning of a possible fault. As soon as you start the engine and oil pressure builds up and the system starts charging both loights should go off as well as the buzzer. There is a third light which is for temperature and should remain off at all times except igf the engine overheats. In order to test it there ia toggle switch in the panel; this switch on the down position will turn lights on the panel for night navigation and in the middle position it is off but when pushed up the temperature light and the buzzer should come on. The key switch is an on and of item which will activate the starter, warning lights and charging system. The engine being a diesel can run without it being on. To stop the engine pull the engine stop cable and turn key off. There is a wiring harness that goes from the control panel to engine sensors, charging and starter circuits. Yanmar sells the new panels to replace cracked ones and they are pretty inexpensive at around $15-$20. The Buzzer on the other hand is over $150. Hope this info helps.

Stock temp indicator-aux. temp gauge together
if u add a temp gauge, and connect both it and the stock Hunter idiot light/buzzer to the same temp sensor/sender on the block, does the difference in resistance from two devices on the same circuit? Does this make any meaningful difference in accuracy?
