The boat is new to me. Wood like to know the process to change the water pump impeller. I can reach two screws on the cover but not the third ona yanmar 1GM. Can any one Help? Gary

Try this

On the 2GM it's easier to take off the entire water pump, affords more ready access. Simply unwind the two long bolts that hold it in place thru the fan belt wheel.

Speed Seal

I, too, have a 2GM20F, so I'm not sure if the water pump is facing aft (what were they thinking about???)on your 1GM. You may have to take the whole pump off (no big deal)to remove the pump cover and to expose the impeller. Once you do this, however, you may want to replace the standard Yanmar water pump cover with a "SpeedSeal." Cost about $80. This will allow you to take off the cover in the future without having to take the pump off.

1GM water pump

Gary We have a 1GM as well, and we were able to get the impeller plate off without removing the whole pump. But, unfortunately, my co-owner actually did the job and I can't remember how he got to that last screw. But I believe it was by going through the belt pulley holes. Sorry for not being more help. But it is doable. Ron Vanderveer

Pulling the impeller

Now that you have the pump plate off,how do you pull the impeller? I tried to pull my impeller off but it wouldn't budge!

Pulling Impeller

For Jim: If all is "well" inside your water pump, you should be able to wiggle the old impeller out by using a good needle nosed pliers applied to the hole in the impeller. If that doesn't work, try using two screw drivers, one on each side of the impeller body, and try to lever the impeller out. If you do this, put some tape around the shaft of the screw drivers to keep from scratching the edge of the water pump housing (which could create sealing problems when you replace the gasket and cover). If all is not "well" inside the pump, it could mean that some debris or even a broken piece of the old impeller is preventing the old impeller from being unseated. Look around the interior of the pump, bend the blades back and forth, and look for and remove anything that could bind the impeller. Impellers are intended to fit snugly in the pump and sometimes getting them out can be hard, but careful persistence usually results in success. Hope this helps.
