My ignition buzzer is slowly dying. I bought my Hunter 38 new in 2009 with the 40hp Yanmar and all associated factory equipment. I noticed a few months ago that the well known loud buzzing sound was missing when I turn on the key. Putting my ear down by the control panel, I could hear a very weak intermittent buzzing, but I am certain nothing would be heard over the engine if I suffered a loss of oil pressure while running. A mechanic told me the Yanmar replacement buzzer is $700 and likely to fail soon. That is far too much for a simple buzzer device. He recommended an entirely new panel, but why if the only problem is the buzzer?
I pulled the panel. The buzzer is a knob like device about the size of a piece of hard candy located right next to the back of the tach. I tapped it a few times with my finger, while the key was on, and it started buzzing like new. A few weeks later, it is back in failure mode. My question: Can a non-electrical engineer guy like me easily replace the buzzer with something more reliable and less expensive? If so, with what and how?
