What's your best/favorite online source for Yanmar engine parts? In particular, I'm looking for the gaskets and o-rings used for a 2GM20F heat exchanger. The big marine stores (Defender, West Marine, and even this forum) don't seem to carry more than impellers.

The marina we stay at is a Yanmar service shop. I’ve used them for belts, service kits, and that kind of thing. You’ll probably need to find someplace similar that’s a Yanmar dealer. I’ve looked around on Amazon for stuff but it’s hard to find the right part numbers reliably.

Mack Boring is the largest distributor for Yanmar engines & parts in the US and you will find a very knowledgeable staff of parts guys there. My other "go-to" place is Niemiec Marine in New Bedford Massachusetts.

Last time I checked, approximately two years ago, Yanmar keeps tight reins on their parts distributors with regards to only allowing them to sell within a defined geographic region. The prices are not fixed; however, you can not shop nationwide to obtain competitive prices. IMHO, Yanmar‘s prices for parts have become ridiculously expensive, even before recent tariffs & shipping cost increases. For example, last year, I replaced all of my engine mounts, Yanmar’s price was over 1,000 less shipping + taxes. Consequently, I chose Ellebogen mounts @ a price under $500. all inclusive. Fortunately, I do have a Yanmar distributor (Diesel Parts Direct), approximately 60 miles from my home, that has a good parts inventory in Baton Rouge, LA. I have driven there, on occasion, to obtain a part immediately. I usually order routine maintenance items from them; their customer service is great.

To the best of my knowledge, Mack Boring does not sell retail, they are the Yanmar supplier.

Niemic Marine is my go to shop for Yanmar parts. Their service is good, usually shipping out that day or for less common parts they are shipped the day they receive them from Mack Boring.

I wasn't aware that Yanmar had such territorial restrictions. Next time I run into anyone from Mack Boring, I'll ask about that. Regarding OEM parts prices, unfortunately, I think this is an industry trend, and from my conversations with colleagues in the industry, Volvo is the worst offender, with Yanmar working very hard to take over the #1 spot.

Couple of years ago, I attempted to order from Mack Boring, thru their online portal. Once I had entered my shipping address, I received a message that I was not in their sales region & the order could not be completed. Don’t know if those restrictions remain.

Big Easy probably remembers our local Yanmar parts place in Covington, La.. Laborde Power Equipment. They were great to deal with and could ship parts to a home. They turned to wholesale only and quit selling to retail folks like sailboat owners.. Bummer. I have used The Diesel Parts Direct folks here in Baton Rouge and find that they are great to deal with. As others have noted, Yanmar is very restrictive on where parts can be purchased; The dealer territories are very strictly enforced by the parent company. However:
Since many engines in the Yanmar line have been and are currently in use in lots of industrial equipment (John Deer tractors, Chillers on reefer railroad cars, skid steer machines, small tractors, etc.), the rotating and some other parts (but not marinized parts like heat exchanger parts) are available through internet suppliers. The trick is to find which machine the engine is used in then go to the search engines. I haven't tried AI searches, but that may be helpful..

Well, @kloudie1 your comment inspired me to check with another Claude to see what my Yanmar 3JH2e is based on. Claude's response:

"The Yanmar 3JH2E is a marine diesel engine based on Yanmar's 3TN series industrial/agricultural diesel engine block. It was adapted and marinized from that land-based engine platform, with modifications appropriate for marine use such as heat exchanger cooling, marine-grade components, and a reduction/reverse gear transmission.

The 3JH2E is a 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel producing around 27–33 hp, and was widely used in sailboats during the 1990s and 2000s."

Yes, I used Laborde Power Products many years ago. They used to be the Yanmar distributor for Southern region. Not sure what their status is now; they Discontinued sales to recreational customers years ago. I have never researched tractor parts for my Yanmar 3YM30. I don’t order frequently and when I do, it’s for routine items such as oil filters, engine fuel filters, air filter, pump impeller, & belts. Thankfully,
Yanmar parts availability is not a problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I also haven't had to buy many Yanmar-specific parts with this boat, because my 2GM20F has just worked flawlessly for 22 years!

Anyway, I just got back from changing the oil, filter, transmission oil this afternoon, and I'm going to vent just a little bit here. I thought I had it all sussed out before I drove out to the boat. The last time I changed the oil filter (and recorded it), I thought I had used a Sierra 18-7910-1 from West Marine, so I checked with AI online that this was compatible (it was) and went and bought another one on my way to the boat. On arriving at the boat, it turned out that I had put a genuine Yanmar filter on the last time, and the difference in sizes between the 2 was HUGE!. The Yanmar filter was almost twice as long and wider than the Sierra to boot. This caused a crash in my confidence that the Sierra was right, which led to almost an hour of searching on my phone, which was not even remotely conclusive. In the end, I figured: well, the Sierra worked last time and nothing blew up, so... Also Google AI (a last minute, new-to-me, AI check: I usually use 2 or 3 other ones) said that the difference in size was not significant.

On a related note, I looked up the official Yanmar dealers near me, and the very small, local parts dealer I've been using for 20 years now (when I don't go to West Marine) just had a retirement sale and closed. This used to be a place I could go for OEM Yanmar parts. After hearing the news of the West Marine bankruptcy, I asked at the local store if they were closing, and the clerk said "no, but 4 other stores in Maryland are". I'm having to revise my negative attitude about WM pricing, given that bricks-and-mortar stores are having such a hard time competing with defender.com et al.

I suggest using a Fleetguard filter. At the risk of sounding like a salesman for the company, Fleetguard is the only filter company that I know of that manufactures its own media. The rest buy media and then have it packaged by a contract manufacturer. The thing about Fleetguard is that it is generally not available in big-box or many auto parts stores. If you want to buy it retail, you have to go to a truck service center or heavy duty truck dealer. It also will not be as cheap. For my 3GM30F, I use an LF3692. For the on-engine fuel filter, the part number is FF5260, which also comes with the p/n 3328934 "O" ring for the housing. Your 2GN20F may use the same items. HTH.

I build motors. I have 2 sets of exchanger gaskets. The reason is when you buy the gasket kit for any 2GM20 (no matter heat exchanger or direct cooling) you get exchanger gaskets. The last two were direct sea water cooled so the heat exchanger gaskets are surplus. Send me PM with your address and I will mail same.

I buy my filters, O Rings, gaskets, etc. from Old Port Marine in Newport, RI. They run the marina services at the port in Newport and have a small retail store, but very well stocked supply of all Yanmar parts. Nice people to speak with and very knowledgeable.
They will ship to you as well. Try them.
