Rich,

Thanks for chiming in. Is there a better aftermarket filter to fit the on-engine filter housing on the Yanmar's, or is the factory filter fine?

I have been unable to find an aftermarket filter for a Westerbeke, that even gives a rating, so have been reluctant to try anything other than the factory supplied filter. Of course I change it yearly, and it is never really that dirty, so I guess my Racor is doing the lion's share, or I have done a decent job of keeping my tank clean?

So what would your ecommend for on-engine filter substitutions, asside from using the factory filters.?

Once again Rich H...

has given us good insight into the subject of filter technology in relatively layman's terms. I personally would feel more comfortable with the subject if the filter manufacturers were more exact in what level of filtration they provide with their product without the jargon that Rich refers to.

On the Racor vacuum gage, when my needle gets three quarters of the way up in the "yellow" zone (before it reachs the "red" zone), I get a new filter ready for installation. Even at that point it once became difficult to run the engine above 2,500 RPM before the filter was changed. That's what prompted me to do the fuel polishing and tank clean-out I did.
