I have some interest in buying a new 2001 Hunter 270. It has a 9 h.p. yanmar inboard diesel. My question concerns the cooling system. Is is a closed unit that will allow me to add antifreeze and use the boat in the winter or does it cool by using lake water therefore requiring me to winterize it? I live in southwest Missouri where our winters can bet to below zero. Thank you

below zero

I don't know if the engine is raw or closed cooling but even so with winter temps below zero you would have to winterize the raw (lake water) side of the system every time you used it. Not only winterizing the engine but muffler, water pump and other associated plumbing,or some how have a heated engine compartment not very practical no matter how you thing about it.

Call Hunter at. . . . .

1--800-771-9463. They can tell you whether that model has a heat exchanger or not. But as the previous post explained, either way it has to be winterized. All diesels pull in water through a thru-hull and a filter. The outside water then goes through the engine OR through the heat exchanger. In both examples it comes in through a waterpump and hoses and goes out through more hoses and the muffler. You cannot let water sit in these places when the temp goes below freezing.

1GM10

The 9HP Yanmar is the 1GM10 that only comes with sea water cooling. A conversion kit is available from Sendure for about $1,000.00. There are two drains on the engine that are easy to open that, if you remembered each time, would protect the internal water part of the engine. The sea water side, from the pick-up, through the pump and muffler and out the transom would have to be protected. These could also be done by draining or you could devise a system to run potable antifreeze through each time you leave the boat. Keep in mind that engines don't freeze, water does. You either get the water out or make it so that it can't freeze. A heater in the engine box with some judicious use of heat tapes would also work.
