Always noticed that my Hunter 1983 34 Hunter had a bad smell of deisel down below. My mechanic tightened some bolts and the dripping from the fuel line stopped. I read that this can keep happening after about 20 hours of the engine running from vibration. Any thoughts to keep the bolts from coming loose. Thank you Craig

There was some discussion on this one a few months back.. There is a “fix” from Yanmar for the leaking banjo bolts in the form of a gasket with a rubber sealing surface. The new type gaskets replace the original soft copper gaskets and stop the leaks. They should be available from your local Yanmar place . Another problem I have found is that the screws holding the top of the engine driven pump in place tend to get loose every couple of years too. Good luck with it, Craig.

Check the secondary filter on the engine too. This is also a common leak area.

Fuel Tank Leak

Craig:

I had a similar problem on my H31. Some of the leak ended up in the quarterberth. I couldn't figure it out until one day I crawled down into the hell hole and discovered a whole lot of diesel sitting on top of my fuel tank. Apparently, a hose clamp came loose. I tightened all hose clamps and the problem went away, but not before some staining had occurred which I was able to clean up.

I have run into this a couple of times and the only solution has been to replace the gaskets. The old copper "crush" gaskets form a good seal the first time you tighten down on them, but if the bolt works loose for any reason, they don't re-seal well at all. I pretty much count on replacing them anytime I have to pull the banjo bolts for any reason.

My dealer hadn't mentioned the new gaskets yet (and why would he? I keep coming back, like an idiot, and buying the copper ones off him!) but that sounds like the best fix. I've tried using third-party rubber gaskets but they seem to work temporarily at best.
