I'm stuck in Maui with a broke starter on my Yanmar. It seems no one in Hawaii stocks may parts. Can anyone recomend a Yanmar dealer in California with a web site or that sells by mail order? I'm looking for a dealr large enough that would stack a starter for a 3JH2. I think CA is my best bet to get it here the quickest. Thanks, Morrie

Morrie, STOP!

Think Hitachi! Take that starter to a autoparts store. It's probably the same as one they have on the shelf. I'd wish you good luck but I don't think you will need it.

Any starter / alternator repair shop

can fix the old one. No magic required to change brushes or bearings. Tell them to fix it and and you're not sure what "vehicle" it was on to avoid the special "marine price"

Absolutely,

just look in the phone book. A couple years ago my truck (Late bodied GMC seen on my web site) told me it's starter brushes were worn out. I removed it, went to my parts drawer and retrieved the brushes and installed them. It works great! The brushes were for my 69 Camaro. P.S. Four years ago the Yanmar dealer in the USVI was asking $750.00 for a rebuilt starter. The new ones were $1350.00. Don't let the bastards grind you down!

Auto Electric Shop!

Morrie Maui (sort of catchy): You may want to consider a quick fix by taking it to an auto electric shop and letting them do their magic. I think that master distributor is Boat Swains Locker in Long Beach, CA. They can give you a dealers name or ship you the part. Remember there is NO "UPS Ground" shipping to the islands, so be prepared for a heafty shipping charge if that is the case. They also do not give these starters away (so be prepared for that too).

Thanks all

Thaks for all your suggestions. I had already checked all the Hawaii dealers, who don't stock much inventory -none had my starter. Checked the Boatswain Locker site and printed a list of CA dealers. The big ones were closed through the holidays - the ones I could reach didn't have it in stock - neither does any auto parts store on Maui. I guess I'm stuck in Maui till sometime after the 3rd. Not too bad a place to be stuck except there predicting a storm with up to 60 knott gusts out of the Southwest. Since I'm anchored in a sweet little bay . . . that's wide open to the Southwest, I've spent all day yesterday putting out anchors. So far though it's been sunny and georgous. Thanks again for all your suggestions, Morrie
