I run a 1989 Yanmar 3GMF engine in my boat. Most of us are quite familiar with the raw water side of the cooling system.... but what about the other side of the heat exchanger? Does this engine have a water pump and thermostat on the clean water side? If so, where are they located, what is the access and what is the typical service experience and maintenance requirements of these cooling system components?

Hi Neil, our Yanmar 4JH2-TE has a fresh...

water captive cooling system water pump and thermostat similar to the one on your car. Ours is located on the upper front of the engine and is belt driven. I suspect you will find the one on your engine in about the same place. Both devices should never need maintenance until replacement. The first sign of trouble is if the bearing seal around the water pump begins to leak, or the engine temperature fails to reach normal operating levels, which is a sign that the thermostat has failed open, as they are designed to do. They do need maintenance though

Clean the pressure cap once in a while with fresh water and change the anty to keep the water pump luburcants and anty rust inhibitors up to strength and you can expect to sell the boat before doing required maintenance.

yes and yes

The fresh water side or "closed" side of the cooling system has both a water pump and a thermostat. If you are familiar with the cooling system in a car it is the same just replace the radiator for the heat exchanger. Changing the anti freeze on a regular schedule (two or five years, depending on what type you are using) and the cap and hoses as needed. Water pump and thermostat as needed, the thermostat is located on the front top of the engine just in front of the valve cover and the water pump is located just below it . This part of the cooling system is low maintenance until something goes bad, and then just replace the defective part.
