I've seen it done with Detroit Diesels

I once did a delivery on a yacht with twin 12-cylinder detroits that had a lever you could throw so that the engines would pump bilge water through their cooling systems. My impression was that this is a fairly common setup on large poweboats.

Glad I could help and I will be certain to pass along your kind words to my engine. By the way, she also has not two but three fuel filters, consumes only the finest synthetic oils and holds all her fluids without complaint.

hmmmmm

but what if.... :) What if somebody built a nice big pump that could be "plugged" into the engine and turned on to pump gastly amounts of water through a temporary 8" hose going overboard. Think about it...we have engines to turn a big prop fast enough to propel a heavy boat through the water. In a time of an emergency, it would be nice to turn all the horsepower into a pump instead of a prop. Then you can say I have a 40 hp bilge pump :) That should move a ton of water fast. How could it be connected...hmmm...maybe like an alternator or some kind of snap it on to the crankshaft pully or something. It would only create a little drag on the engine when not in use, but flip a switch and watch it pump 3000 gallons a minute when you give the engine gas. Now that would be impressive.

Okay, I'll bite...Side mount pump with a free wheel electromagnetic clutch like used on an automobile A/C compressor. Virtually no drag until you flip the switch... What's the number to that I've gotta new invention, don't worry we'll keep it a secret and patent it for you guy that advertises on TV?

bilge pump

MKing, It's a great idea that has been used before so go ahead and get what you need to do it. As for the rest of the devils advocates, The set up MKing is talking about is for emergency use only not a permanent set up to cool the engine. I don't know if I would put the tee and shut off valve in the line for hooking it up, but I would definately have the spare parts in a place in the engine compartment to hook it up. I wouldn't want another place where a valve could fail and water enter the boat, but that's just my opinion. If you need an extra pump to pump water out it wouldn't take long to hook it up by removing the intake hose and putting a splice connector in. If water is comming in so fast that you can't get the pump hooked up, start loading the booze in the dinghy. :D
