YANMAR 4JHE WINTERIZING

Hi Guy
I have a 1987 Hunter legend 40 ft with the yanmar 4jhe engine
About a year ago i had a a lot of engine work done to it when it was down in the Chesapeake bay area
including a whole new exhaust manifold , exhaust hose all new engine hose an new sea pump impel plus

So last fall planed to winterize it with installing the water type antifreeze in to the sea side cooling system
an looking it over i thought i should be able to install it in the Perko sea strainer
I have the older bronze 1" size with the two wing nut on top so i can easily remove the top plate an pull an clean the st st
strainer an should be able to pore in the antifreeze perko cap it about level to top of engine about 3 or 4 inches above seawater pump intake port
So i started it up an left it ideal keeping the cooling water sea cock closed i removed the top of the perko
thinking to add the antifreeze there
problem that i have is the seawater in the perko unit did not get pull down so was not able to add it there
I think this should of worked so had to pull off pump intake hose an add there but only real slowly
Does the engine need to running at a higher rpm to add the antifreeze in to the Perko sea strainer
If so does it get an water in it during a a low idea So can it be working good an over heat ???

Thanks Rick

I have poured pink AF in my Perko strainer to winterize my Yanmar 2GM20F in the past. It worked OK, but it is better I think to pull the hose off the Perko and put that in a jug of AF. My hose clamps are a biscuit to reach, lots of bloody knuckles, which is why I tried pouring the AF in the strainer.

If I understand you, which I am not sure I am, you are not getting any suction from the water pump, so it isn’t pulling water (or AF) from the strainer?

Hi Greg
Thank you have help me out in the past
Correct when i try an pore the PAF in top of the perko strainer with the engine running at a ideal
she does not want to take

So this spring i an going to pull an replace the impel in the pump the impela has about 24 hr on it an get about 5 gal of water an add some food color to it to check an make sure the water is going thru

( I am thinking that it should be pulling water in even at a ideal )

I think that is my plan for now

Thanks Rick

Hi Greg
I also asked Michael at Mack Boring
an he recommended this cap with hose fitting on it to help doing the winterizesing in the perko sea strainer

I an thinking of getting it an start out flushing the system one a year

I help a friend with a Yanmar 2gm. His Perko strainer has a drain fitting that we open to drain the seawater. Then we disconnect the hose at the pump and add a 2' piece of hose to go to the A/F bottles. On my boat, i am able to pour the A/F into the strainer and this works well. He doesn't have enough room over his strainer top to do the pour method. Certainly need a good impeller for this to wotrk,

HI RitSim Where you able to feed the AF in with the engine at a ideal speed
or did you need to increase the RPM to get pump to pull the AF

I have always followed Maine Sail's, Rod's advise. Doesn't matter what engine. Never had a problem.
