Yanmar 4JH2E Oil Pressure Gauge

Hello All,
I have been looking for information about about oil pressure gauges. For some time, mine has been acting erratically on my Yanmar engine. Sometimes it does not move at all when I turn the engine on and sometimes it registers incorrectly and sometimes it is "normal", although I think it is a little low. The archives have some things related to a post by Rich D. who had a similar problem. My question is if I change over to a non-Yanmar gauge and sender, will my low oil alarm still work. I have heard that the alarm is located at a different location than the oil pressure sender unit on the engine. Anyone know for sure?

........................ as they should be two different circuits with two different senders.

Why not start with replacing the cheaper component first, the modulating pressure sender?. If this doesn't work, install a new gauge secondly. Either way, neither component is too expensive if you shop around on the web. VDO puts out a good line of marine gauges.

The sending unit for the gauge has a limited lifespan. My gauge was also acting erratically so I did some research and found a lot of folks with that engine complaining after so many years. The sending unit is about $100. I actually checked mine and re-positioned the wires and it is better now so I may have bought some time.

The alarm sending unit is on a separate circuit which is not affected by the gauge and it's sending unit.

you can get a WEMA sending unite a lot cheaper than $100.00 along with a new gage as well...but first try making sure your connections are in good contact ...you may have corrosion or a loose connection....

Agree with Woody. First examine and clean the contacts. Then, if that doesn't work, replace the sending unit.

I'd try replacing the extra quick connectors in the circuit first. There are about 12 connections in these circuits. This will also go a long way to curing your "starter don't work" problem before it happens.

and by replace I mean get rid of them and make wire splices. They are handy for building the boat but since most folks don't pull their engine regularly they are just another connection that gets corroded and causes problems
